Tips for traveling to Barcelona and Catalonia’s cities

Flying is certainly the fastest, easiest and often the cheapest way to get to the capital of Catalonia. The flight from London to Barcelona is about two hours. Barcelona is served by three airports: Barcelona (El Prat de Llobregat), Girona and Reus. Here you can find out how to most easily get from there to the city of Barcelona.

Nevertheless car or trains are frequently used means of transport for getting to Barcelona. Here you will also find some good tips.

If you would you like to travel from the airport to places in Catalonia, for example Blanes, Lloret de Mar, or Sitges, you can find information about how this works simply by using public transport.

Barcelona’s airport - El Prat de Llobregat, or just "BCN" – is about 15 kilometers outside the city. From here there are several possibilities for a transfer to the inner city: the Aerobus, the buses 46 and N17, by train, by taxi or private transfer.

The airport "Girona - Costa Brava" (GRO) is located about 80 kilometers from Barcelona. Girona is primarily a hub for Ryanair. From Girona you easily travel with a shuttle bus to Barcelona in about 70 minutes.

Reus airport is located about 85 kilometers southwest of Barcelona. Reus is the second minor airport besides Girona that is also served by so-called "low cost airlines." For travelers from Central Europe the connections are mainly Ryanair. They offers flights from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt / Hahn and Memmingen in Germany, from Brussels in Belgium and Eindhoven in Holland. There is currently no connection to Reus from Austria and Switzerland.

You can reach Barcelona by car via three toll motorways. A ring road leads around the city, which merges into the motorways. On the ring road itself, you can usually progress reasonably well apart from the centre of the city. However during rush hour there is also regular congestion at the hubs, eg Plaça de les Glòries.

Barcelona is a major ferry terminal for routes to Genoa, Ibiza and Mallorca. It is also the main port for cruise ships in the Mediterranean: for example, the ships of the Aida, or RoyalCaribbean MSC Cruises begin their voyages into the Mediterranean from here. The piers of ferries and cruise ships are in close proximity to the city centre, the port begins immediately at the end of the Rambla.
