Barcelona uses two official languages side by side: Castilian (Spanish) and Catalan. Contrary to popular belief, Catalan is not a Spanish dialect but a separate Romance language.
In authorities, universities and other public services the Catalan language carries greater importance.
In the tourism sector, especially in hotels, English is standard. The language skills outside the tourist area is not particularly widespread, but Spanish people are very helpful and understanding, if you do not speak their language.
Since Catalan has many elements from the French language it is often better understood if you try it with French. With English, especially among older people, you will sometimes have difficulties
