Tips for booking your hotel

Here are our tips for booking affordable accommodations in Barcelona year-round:

• Avoid trade fair periods: Barcelona is a trade fair city, and hotel prices can rise during these times. The Mobile World Congress in spring, the most important trade fair for mobile communication, is one you should avoid if possible. The week before and after, hotel rooms cost only a third of the peak price.
• Book early: You can also find a good deal with a last-minute booking, but generally, it's cheaper the earlier you book.
• Non-refundable rooms: This can save you around 10%. However, you must pay the full price if you can't travel for any reason. Only choose this option if you're certain you can make the trip.
• One less star: A hairdryer, for example, is mandatory in a 4-star hotel, but most 3-star or 2-star hotels also provide one. Check the amenities to see what you really need.
• Book without breakfast: You can usually save money by having breakfast in one of the many bars and restaurants that offer it. They are almost everywhere.
• Consider the location: You can find affordable hotels up to 3 stars throughout the city, including downtown. More affordable 4 or 5-star hotels are generally located outside the city center. Also, consider the transport connections. Barcelona’s metro system is efficient, so being near a metro station is a plus.
• Beach hotels? There is only one hotel in Barcelona that is directly on the beach: the 5-star "W Barcelona" hotel. For all other hotels near the beach, at least one road separates the beach from the hotel. These hotels are generally more expensive than those further inland. You won’t find any 1-3-star hotels directly on the beach.
• Be realistic: A 4-star hotel with a pool near the beach and just a few meters from the city center at the price of a hostel does not exist.
• Hotels outside of Barcelona: Hotels are often cheaper outside the city, but consider this carefully: you'll need to commute into the city every day, and you may have to travel longer distances from the train station to your hotel.
• Don’t book illegal accommodations: You could end up stranded with no refund. All accommodations on Booking.com are legal.
