Climate, travel time and weather forecast for Barcelona

The main climate data of Barcelona and the seasonal peculiarities

As a coastal city on the Mediterranean, Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate. This means that the climate is balanced and mild.

In the summer months, the Azores high ensures warm weather and in the peak summer months of July and August, sometimes hot and dry weather. Extreme summer heat is comparatively rare. The average summer temperatures are around 28°C.

The city itself is protected from cold winds that often blow from the Pyrenees over Catalonia by the Conserolla Mountains in winter. So even in winter temperatures below 0 degrees are rarely to be expected in Barcelona.

In winter, when the Azores high moves south, westerly winds with a little more rain prevail in the Mediterranean climate. The winter daytime temperatures are on average around 13°C.

A few important climate data

The climate refers to the long-term weather behavior in a region over a period of at least 30 years. The weather, on the other hand, describes the short-term atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, precipitation and wind, that prevail in a particular place right now.

Barcelona has a temperate Mediterranean climate: warm in summer, sometimes hot, and rarely very cold days in winter. Many outdoor activities are possible. People who are used to a cooler climate in particular often enjoy the pleasant weather, so they can sit outside in the cafes in autumn and winter.

Travel times

  • Winter December to February
In winter, rainy and cool weather is often to be found, but temperatures rarely fall below 0°C. C. Ideal for exploring various museums or going out in the evening to bars, discos or a nice restaurant visit and other evening events.
Especially in winter there are also days with particularly clear air and good visibility. It is worth climbing the Tibidabo, for example, and experiencing the view all the way to the Pyrenees or taking a balloon ride. Guided tours and city tours also take place.
  • Spring
From March / April the days become significantly longer again and the temperatures rise. People are drawn back outside onto the streets and into the cafes, even if the locals still find the temperatures cool.
In early spring it is still relatively quiet, the sights are still relatively empty. It is a good time to visit museums, but also to go outside a little and take part in city tours. In the evenings and at night it can get quite cold, however, and during the day it can reach around 20 degrees. There are occasional rainy days.
  • Early summer May and June
Popular travel months are May and June, when the temperatures rise again and people are drawn back outside. Extremely hot days are not to be expected here, the temperatures are pleasant. At the end of June, the beaches are busier again, although the sea is still too cold for most people to swim.
The weather is now perfect for guided tours and spring is making itself felt in the parks. It is a nice time to be outside. It is still cool in the evenings and at night, but light transitional clothing should suffice.
  • Midsummer July and August
The midsummer months of July and August are with an average temperature of 28° C. Barcelona is then a little quieter, as many people go to the beach or retreat into their houses. Some restaurants, museums and shops are closed in August or have shorter opening hours. On the other hand, there are also many festivals and other open-air events.
In midsummer it is often quite hot and sometimes humid. If you can't stand this, you should visit the museums or buildings during the hottest midday heat and go outside in the late afternoon. The locals celebrate the siesta during this time, so the city only comes to life again from 5 p.m. You can then sit outside until late into the night.
  • Autumn September and October
In September the sea is still at a pleasant temperature, so swimming is still possible. The air temperature is also a pleasant 22-25°C.
In the evening it gets a little cooler, but you can still sit outside. Autumn offers pleasant temperatures for city tours or guided tours. Cloudy days can be spent indoors visiting a museum.
  • Late autumn November
November also offers quite a few days with quite sunny weather. In the evenings it gets cool and there is often rain. Rain in Barcelona rarely means continuous rain, but rather shorter showers.
You may want to take rain protection with you on guided tours. Late autumn is the perfect time to go out in the evening, along with winter.

What can you do in Barcelona when it rains?

A whole lot! Even though rain is rare, it's good to know that you can still experience a lot in Barcelona even when the weather is "bad". We particularly enjoy visiting exciting museums or the numerous historical buildings - or just making ourselves comfortable when going out.

Our tip: It can rain in Barcelona in the winter months, and sometimes the showers are heavy and long-lasting. It's worth packing waterproof clothing. However, umbrellas are offered by street vendors as soon as the first raindrops start to fall.
However, longer periods of bad weather are rare.
