Plaça d'Espanya is a central transport hub in Barcelona in front of Montjuïc, Barcelona's home mountain. It is an always flowing roundabout. Plaça d'Espanya itself has stops for the L1, L3 and FGC subways and the huge Las Arenas shopping center, which is housed in a former bullring. A few steps away from Plaça Espanya you will find the Font Màgica, which unfolds its incredible effect especially in the evening.
The exact times can be found on the notice board on the buses. The buses run every 5-25 minutes, depending on the season and occupancy.
No tours in January and February and 25 and 26 December.
In the immediate surroundings of Plaça d'Espanya, the Montjuïc is located. To explore it, the Plaça d'Espanya, which was opened on the occasion of the World Fair, is ideal as a starting point. The grandiose staging of the square served as the entrance to the World Exposition. The Palau National is situated in the view axis through the two brick towers, which are based on St.Mark's tower in Venice. Inside, the Museu National d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) is placed there, today.
These towers are the entrance to the fairground and here starts the Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina. It is appropriate to note that you can also pass without admission during fair operation. The Fair (Fira de Barcelona) is situated on the left hand side of the Plaça d'Espanya.
After about 300 metres from the towers in the direction of the Palau National d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), the Plaça de Carles Buïgas appears. This is the Font Màgica, the Magic Fountain. In the daytime rather unspectacular, however, in the evening it is really magical.
The Font Màgica, the magical fountain
You can attend a special spectacle. Font Màgica spray fountains in correspondence to the sound of music. Font Màgica are a total work of art, music, water, motion and colour. The plant has a total of 3,000 water jets; about 2,000 litres of water per second are pressed through them.
The water games occupy a surface of 50 * 65 meters; the largest diameter of the water basin is 35 meters. Five pumps ensure that 2,600 litres per second of water run through a total of 1,500 meters of pipelines to the 3,620 jets.
The maximum water pressure corresponds to a water column of 54 meters. The fountains are controlled by 134 engines and 109 valves. Together with the lighting system of 8 different colours, it is cared for to put one into the mood.
The music comes from an impressive sound system and 6 km air pipes.
It is worthwhile to visit the magical water games of the Font Màgica several times. The games take approximately 15 minutes and are repeated several times in the evening.
In total, there are nearly 30 different arrangements. We listed some of the songs played:
The program varies depending on the weekday.
